About

While somewhat similar to Italian frames, Spanish frames are known for their flamboyant style. Usually dramatic with gilt or polychrome finishes and sculptural carvings, these frames were also made with stark ebonized finishes on simple cassetta designs. The 17th century was the pinnacle of Spanish frame making. Lowy has over 400 examples ranging from the 16th – 19th centuries.

Parcel Gilt – Frames that are partially gilded and partially finished with a painted or stained surface.

Sgrafitto / estofado – A decorative design process created by Italian framemakers in the Renaissance made by applying a paint layer over burnished gold and then using a tool to scratch through to reveal gold leaf beneath and create beautiful panel ornamentation.
